Poker is a family of card games played worldwide. Players make wagers to try to beat other players by creating the best hand possible. Typically, poker is played with a standard 52-card deck, but other types of cards can be used.
Most games of Poker have two or more rounds of betting. The first round begins with the player who opened the bet. After that, the action moves to the next player. If that player folds, the next player can call or raise.
The final round of betting usually starts with the player who has the best hand. This is sometimes called a showdown. A hand that has five consecutive cards of the same suit in sequential order is considered a straight. Other types of hands are a flush, which has five cards of the same suit in any order, or a low hand, which is a pair or three of a low rank.
Before each round of betting, each player will be dealt a number of cards. These may be face down or face up.
Each player will then choose whether to open the bet or to fold. When the pot is “capped,” that is, when there are three raises, the betting phase ends.
The ante is the small bet that a player makes to get the action started. It is usually $1 or $5. In later rounds, the ante increases to a larger amount.
During each round of betting, each player is required to buy a fixed number of chips. They are also obligated to make forced bets.
